A Tallent & Lowery Valentine Adventure
Part I:Leah Tallent stared at the huge orange cat sitting atop the pile of books in the basement of the NYPL. Offering him a smile and reaching out her hand, the feline responded with nose in the air, turning around to offer his backside in response.“Typical male,” she snorted, leaning back into the worn leather sofa.

This was the first Valentine’s Day she could truly celebrate. And Gareth Lowery, Leah’s true soulmate that she’d waited for, without actually knowing that she’d been waiting for the past two decades, was the gift she was celebrating. Even though they’d been through some of the most harrowing adventures, the one thing that remained true was the fact that Gareth’s love and loyalty were as rock solid as the faith he had in her.

As the door swung open, Gareth walked into the basement that was Leah’s salvation. The cat barely raised his head.

She laughed. “He isn’t afraid of anything.”

Walking over, Gareth leaned down to offer her a kiss. “Much like his mother.”

Putting a large box in her hands, Leah rolled her eyes. “I told you not to do this.”

Sighing, he fell onto the couch beside her. “It’s Valentine‘s Day and you are my Valentine. So…shut up and open it.”

Leah batted her lashes at the stunning emerald eyes. “You are such a master with words.” Ripping off the paper, she stared at the large coffee pot and clapped with delight. “YOU know how to purchase a gift.”
“It is a specialty. You can have coffee, espresso, tea – you name it, it’s yours.” Taking the sleek, glossy machine from the box, Gareth walked over to the small corner and picked up Leah’s most prized possession.

“You can’t get rid of that!”

“This thing came over on the Mayflower,” he replied, as the old pot’s handle broke off in his hand. “Actually, the Mayflower probably had a better one on hand.”

Leah grabbed her chest. “I’m having separation anxiety already.”

Setting up the gift, the smell of Leah’s beloved concoction wafted through the basement, as if alerting the historic group of authors that it was time to awaken and enjoy life once again.

Coming over with the steaming cup in hand, Gareth passed it to her and was awarded with a sigh. “I feel like we’re vacationing on some island somewhere. This is perfect.”

“Don’t I wish,” Gareth sighed. “Seems every time we leave this cellar, a pleasant vacation never happens.”

“What do you mean?” Leah’s eyes grew wide. “We’ve been in haunted houses. We walked in the path of Jack the Ripper. We even went to Loch Ness and met up with major psychos. How many other relaxing jaunts do you want?”

“True.” Gareth laughed, reaching his hand around her shoulders to cradle Leah in his arms. “After you came along, vacations definitely went to the dark side.”

She sat up straight. “If I remember correctly, you are the person who was blowing up my library when we met, remember?”

“Still the best money I ever spent on dynamite,” he said with a wink.

“You’re a freak,” Leah mumbled, taking a long swallow of the amazing coffee.

Reaching into his pocket, Gareth withdrew a heart-shaped box.

“I told you I didn’t want anything.”

“Want me to return the coffee pot?”

“Want me to return you to Loch Ness?”

Taking the coffee mug from her hands, Gareth placed the gift into her warm palm. “Open the box.”

Expecting the requisite chocolates, which would certainly go great with the new, improved coffee, Leah was surprised to find nothing but a small piece of paper inside. On the paper was a hand drawn heart with the words: “Clue Number One,” written beside it. She stared into Gareth’s mischievous gaze. “Seriously?”

“You are good at puzzles…as we know,” Gareth said. Rising from the couch, he took Leah’s hand and pulled her up beside him. “And there’s something hidden above us in that grand library of yours that you have to find.”

“Please be joking.”

“It’ll be fun! I promise.” Pulling her close, Gareth bent down and whispered in her ear, “Come on. You know you want to exercise that brain of yours.”

Leah trembled as his lips brushed against her neck.

“Please?” he whispered.

“Fine.“ She stepped back and stared at the most incredible man she’d ever met. “But it’s only because I find it wrong to rip your clothes off in front of the child.” Pointing at the cat who was now standing on the pile of books and staring directly at them, Leah turned, walked up the staircase, and opened the door to the library that was literally her haven in any storm.

The lights were dimmed and the foot traffic that should be happening on a Thursday afternoon was absent. In fact, the NYPL was completely deserted. Leah felt an odd chill race up her spine, thinking of all the frightening things she and Gareth had experienced when solving their last puzzle. “Alien spacecraft missed Roswell this time and picked up our patrons?”

Putting his hand around her waist, Gareth laughed. “See? Told you. You rock at puzzle-solving.”

Leah couldn’t find her smile; the busy haven she knew now looked like a place where the world had come to an abrupt end…
